AYSO United - Michigan

AYSO United Coach - Brett Beckett

BACKGROUND

Originally born in Dallas, TX, I moved to Michigan when my dad left the military to be by family in the Grand Rapids area. I graduated from Caledonia High School in 1999. I currently live in Hudsonville with my wife Laura, who is a teacher in the local public school district, and our kids Hattie, Avery, and Beatrice.

PHILOSOPHY

I believe in developing athletes on and off of the pitch. It isn’t good enough in life to be the best athlete, with the most talent and skill. Skills and technical ability can be taught to anyone who has the passion, drive, determination and willpower to learn. Leadership is the true testimony of real success as an athlete. Can you build others up when they’re down? Will you cheer them on in success and keep others around you realizing how important they are to the overall talent of the team? Or are you defeated as a player when the team is down? Being a leader will always take you farther in life than any sport will. EVER!

EXPERIENCE

Soccer has been a part of my life on-and-off growing up. I played in the youth programs, as most athletes did. The great Saturday morning matches, practices after school throughout the week, and tournaments that you travel to with your friends. I also excelled in other sports like baseball, downhill skiing, football (Yes, the American version) and more. However, my love for coaching has always been there. I started coaching immediately out of high school and have been a coach ever since. I was the Head Coach at Catholic Central High School for the Ski Team, with teams making the State Championships for the first time in school history. I also coached football at Caledonia High School, under my high school football coach, who constantly inspired my style of coaching. I have coached soccer for over 9 years now and have studied the game and continued my coaching education during that time. I am seeking my D license this year and plan to continue past that next year.

SOCCER HIGHLIGHT

I think the biggest highlight for me as a soccer has been watching each of my older two kids grow in the sport. I have coached both of them at one point or another in the sport at various levels. It has been stressful at times for sure, my daughter happens to be my keeper, but mainly an inspiration to watch their dedication to honing their talents and love for the same game I love.

FAVORITE TEAM

Liverpool & The US Women’s National Team

BEST COACHING MEMORY

My best coaching memory isn’t just one flash of mental lens. It has been watching my AYSO United Elite Ladies grow over the last 4 years. I have some ladies who have played soccer for me for a majority of their lives. To watch this team each season grow together as SISTERS and also teammates is nothing short of inspiring! They have each others back on the pitch, and off of the pitch!
